One Yard: Turning heartbreak into redemption

After Highland Park football’s historic 9-0 season this year, I co-produced a documentary on the Giants’ season. After 14 interviews and over a month of editing, it’s finally done.

This piece, “One Yard,” highlights the Giants’ journey from facing heartbreak after falling one yard short of a conference title last year vs. GBN. We look into their quest for redemption this year on GBN’s home turf, coupled with a drive to win the conference for the first time since ’09 and cap off the first undefeated regular season in school history—all in coach Hal Chiodo’s final season at HPHS.

Bucky’s 5th Quarter: Melvin Gordon postseason analysis

For SB Nation’s Bucky’s 5th Quarter, I teamed up with fellow writer over these past few weeks Zach Wingrove on two pieces about Wisconsin’s Heisman candidate Melvin Gordon.

The first, which you can find by clicking here, examines the best NFL fits for MGIII, who declared for the draft following this season.

Another, link here, takes a look back at Gordon’s 15 best runs from the 2014-15 season. It’s pretty incredible to watch some of these runs—I’ve watched them over and over and over again. It’s borderline hypnotic.

Bucky’s 5th Quarter: Gary Andersen’s departure from Wisconsin

Today, Wisconsin football coach Gary Andersen announced his stunning intention to leave Madison and head to Oregon State. For SB Nation’s Bucky’s 5th Quarter, I looked into some of the reasons behind Andersen’s departure with Drew Hamm, a fellow writer, both of which appeared quite suspicious. You can check out the piece by clicking here.

HP Sports Brief: Highland Park football improves to 8-0 with 34-14 win over Niles North

Highland Park football closed with a 20-0 second half to take down Niles North and move to 8-0. The win set up a conference championship game against Glenbrook North next Friday night. Last year, the Spartans beat the Giants 21-17 and won the CSL North Title after their defense stopped HP’s Kelshawn Shields one yard short of the end zone on a fourth-and-goal attempt with ten seconds last.
